Equipment

  • Skillet
  • mixing bowl
  • grater
  • Measuring spoons

Ingredients

Meatballs

  • 2 slices white sandwich bread crusts removed, chopped into small cubes
  • 1 onion small (brown, white or yellow)
  • 300 g ground beef mince
  • 300 g ground pork mince, or sub with more beef
  • 1 unit egg
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg preferably freshly grated
  • ¼ teaspoon All Spice powder
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon oil

Gravy

  • 40 g butter unsalted
  • 3 tablespoon flour
  • 2 cups beef broth/stock salt reduced, or sub with chicken
  • ½ cup heavy cream

Instructions

Preparation of Meatballs

  • Grate onion using a standard box grater.
  • Scrape onion and juices into bowl. Add bread and mix well – onion juice should make bread soggy.
  • Add remaining Meatball ingredients EXCEPT oil. Mix well.
  • Using a tablespoon measure, dollop onto work surface. Repeat to form 25 – 30 meatballs. Roll them into shape.

Cooking Meatballs

  • Heat oil in a skillet over medium high heat. Brown half the meatballs for about 3 minutes, then remove onto plate.
  • Brown the remaining batch of meatballs.

Making Gravy

  • Add butter into skillet and melt. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute.
  • Gradually add beef broth while stirring, making it lump free.
  • Add the meatballs and their juices to the simmering gravy.
  • Keep the heat at a rapid simmer for 8 – 10 minutes until thick.
  • Add cream, simmer for a further 2 minutes then remove from stove.
  • Serve over mashed potato or Cauliflower Mash.

Notes

For a truly authentic experience, add a dollop of ligonberry jam on the side.
