Equipment

  • Oven

  • medium saucepan

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs ground beef (85/15 or 80/20)
  • 1 small finely minced sweet onion
  • 2 large eggs lightly beaten
  • 2 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce or steak sauce
  • cup panko breadcrumbs OR fresh breadcrumbs
  • 1 ½ teaspoon seasoned salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon granulated garlic or garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 3 tablespoon unsalted butter or salted butter
  • 3 tablespoon all purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth or beef stock
  • ¼ teaspoon salt adjust amount to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper adjust amount to taste
  • chopped fresh parsley for garnishing

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F. Lightly spray a 13x9-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
  • In a large bowl combine the ground beef, onion, eggs, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, seasoned salt, black pepper, onion powder and garlic powder. Mix gently until just combined.
  • Form the mixture into 6 oval-shaped patties and place them in the prepared baking dish.
  • Transfer to the oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until cooked through and juices have run clear and collected in the pan.
  • Transfer the hamburger steaks to a plate and tent loosely with foil to keep warm.
  • On the stovetop in a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add flour, stirring to combine for 1-2 minutes.
  • Whisk in pan dripping and beef stock. Add salt and pepper. Bring to a gentle simmer then lower the heat and let bubble and thicken for 5 minutes.
  • Return the hamburger steaks to the baking dish and spoon the gravy over the top.
  • Sprinkle the top with fresh parsley and serve hot with mashed potatoes or rice to soak up the gravy.

Notes

Don't overmix the hamburger. Use ground beef with some fat for better flavor and moisture. Shape patties evenly for consistent cooking. You could adapt this recipe using ground chicken or ground turkey. We love these with mashed potatoes or rice to soak up the gravy. Adjust gravy thickness by adding more flour or liquid as needed.
