Equipment

  • Skillet

Ingredients

Rice and Seasonings

  • 1 cup Basmati rice or jasmine rice for a twist
  • 1 teaspoon Turmeric powder for color and flavor
  • 1 teaspoon Salt to taste
  • ½ teaspoon Black pepper freshly ground

Cooking Base

  • 2 tablespoons Unsalted butter or coconut oil for dairy-free
  • 1 medium Onion diced, can substitute shallots
  • 2 cloves Garlic minced

Liquids and Garnish

  • 2 cups Chicken stock or vegetable stock for vegetarian
  • 2 tablespoons Parsley freshly chopped, optional

Instructions

Preparation Steps

  • Thoroughly rinse the basmati rice under cold running water to remove excess debris and surface starch, which helps achieve fluffy grains.
  • Melt the unsalted butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onion and minced garlic and sauté for 1-2 minutes until they become translucent and fragrant.
  • Stir in the turmeric powder and mix well so it evenly coats the rice and aromatics, imparting a beautiful golden color and warm flavor.
  • Pour in the chicken or vegetable stock. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Stir everything together and bring to a rolling boil.
  • Reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet with a tight-fitting lid, and let the rice simmer gently for 15 minutes, until the liquid is absorbed and the rice is tender.
  • Turn off the heat and let the rice rest covered for about 5 minutes to allow steam to finish cooking the grains. Then gently fluff the rice with a fork to separate the grains.
  • Sprinkle freshly chopped parsley over the turmeric rice for a fresh pop of color and flavor. Serve warm as a flavorful side dish.

Notes

You can substitute basmati rice with jasmine rice for a slightly different texture and aroma. Use coconut oil instead of butter to make the dish dairy-free and vegan-friendly. Adjust salt and pepper to taste according to your preference. For enhanced flavor, toast the rice lightly in the butter before adding the stock.
