Base Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • ½ cup packed brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons milk or as needed
  • 1 cup confectioners' sugar divided
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Preparation Steps

  • Gather all ingredients.
  • Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in brown sugar and 3 tablespoons milk. Boil vigorously for 1 minute.
  • Remove from heat and stir in ½ cup confectioners' sugar.
  • Cool slightly, then beat in vanilla and remaining ½ cup confectioners’ sugar. Add additional milk, 1 teaspoon at a time, if frosting is too thick.

Notes

This frosting sets quickly. It's best to spread immediately after preparing. Cream may be substituted for the milk to add richness.
